It's July!! Woo-hoo one of my favorite months of the year. Happy Canada Day to our Canadian readers out there, keep in mind this is a 4th of July post, but you can make these today for Canada Day! Growing up I remember my Grandma Watson making the best sugar cookies, for all occasions. It didn't matter what holiday or family event was taking place you could guarantee were always sugar cookies there. When I was trying to think of something to do for the 4th of July I suddenly remembered my Grandma's cookies. I've never made them before so I called my Mom for the recipe.
What I didn't realize is the work that goes into making these. Holy smokes! I think I worked on them for like 4 hours. Mostly this is because I'm not a baker and couldn't figure out how to roll out the dough without it breaking up . But once I got over the learning curve it got a lot better! Keep in mind this isn't a "healthy treat" but it is worth it! I'm sure I could play around with the recipes and try and make it healthier but sometimes it's just best to leave things how they are meant to be.

I am horrible at reading directions so I just threw in all the ingredients into my mixer.... well this isn't how it works. You need to mix the sugar, butter, egg and extracts first. So I ended up having to add in a little milk into it. I made another batch after and followed the directions and I didn't need to add any milk. But if you think it looks too dry you can always add in some milk.
Sugar Cookie Glaze:
1 cup powdered sugar
3 - 4 tsp milk
food coloring
Add in food color and mix with fork. You can add more powdered sugar to make it thicker.
Decorating cookies is so fun, yet once again takes so much time. I bought some store piping cause I wasn't about the make that. Jay was working nights so I had all the time in the world to create fun and different designs.

Remember you can make these cookies for Christmas, birthday's or anything. Lastly I leave you a photo of my Grandma and I. She died when I was fairly young, but it is fun to remember her through recipes. I encourage you all to call your Mothers and find some of your Grandma's old recipes. I'm sure they won't be super healthy, but I know they won't disappoint.
Cheers,
Jess
