I am so bad about cleaning my ring, thankfully my girlfriend Katie bought me an awesome ring steamer. I often remember to use it when I’m home, but as of lately I’m rarely home so I needed to find some other methods. I love having a sparkly ring so the minute I walk into the door at my house I change my clothes and take off my jewelry. I never do any house work with my ring on which usually keeps it sparkling and I’m less likely to hit it on something while cleaning.
However, when I travel I’m so afraid I will lose my wedding rings that I keep them on all day and night. Which means, they get exposed to makeup, hair spray, lotions, self tanners, conditioner, etc etc! This makes for a VERY dirty ring. Here are a few things I usually can find when I’m traveling or staying at a family member or friends home that will clean your ring! I also added a little bonus on how to clean costume jewelry, I know mine needs cleaned here and there!
For Diamonds:
1. Windex
Spray the cleaner on your ring, then use a toothbrush to scrub. I suggest having a small toothbrush you use exclusively for jewelry cleaning. This enables you to clean under and around the stone to allow your ring to sparkle! More Light=Brighter Bling!
2. Alka-Seltzer
This one is my favorite, probably cause I love Alka-Seltzer, I’m seriously an Alka-Seltzer addict! Me and all the 80 year olds! I found out a few years ago that you can also use it for cleaning jewelry and since I basically buy it in bulk I use it often to clean my diamond studs and rings. Drop your diamond ring into a glass full of fizzing Alka-Seltzer until the bubbles subside. I love using it with my pave diamonds all the bubbles get into all the little nooks of the rings.
3. Dish Soap
Now this one is super simple! I often hear people saying to put a small amount of dish soap and warm water into a dish and scrub… I take the lazier approach and I just put a dab of dish soap on my ring and grab a toothbrush and clean away. Then simply rinse the ring in the sink (making sure the drain is closed) and voilà!
4. Vodka
Holy smokes, I’m so happy to learn about this one! A few drops of vodka will clean any kind of glass or jewelry with crystalline stones. Although you might get some interesting looks when you drop your wedding ring into your glass of vodka soda! Oh well just smile and own it!
5. Baking Soda
Mix one part baking soda with one part water together. Apply with your jewelry toothbrush, lightly scrub, rise, dry, complete!

For Costume Jewelry:
Friends don’t ever put rhinestones into water or chemical dips. Moisture will damage the foil backing, therefore the stone will not sparkle. This can also cause any of the glued in stones to loosen from the settings.
It’s safer to put a tiny bit of windex on a soft cloth and gently wipe the jewelry. Then dry it quickly with a hair dryer set on COOL!!!!
Now we have your real and faux diamonds sparkling just in time for valentines day!
Cheers,
Jess
