So I posted on instagram a month of two ago but about my fire ladder and a few other of my fire safety items. I was surprised to see how many comments I got so I thought I'd put together some of our fire safety tips. Leo is now at the age where we understands dangerous situations so we have started talking about these important topics. I have quite a few little things to touch upon so I thought I'd do a 2 part blog post on our safety plans and tips we practice in our house and some things that I need to address as he gets older. With that let's talk about fire safety.
1. Safety Gear-
- Fire Extinguishers- I have one in our bedroom the kids are across a catwalk on the other side of the house. So I have a fire extinguisher to get to the kids room if needed. I also have one downstairs in our laundry room which is right next to our kitchen and then one in our garage. I know it's a little overkill but you never know.
- Fire Ladder- When I ordered my ladder my husband rolled his eyes like I was an idiot. But I have this in our room under my bed. So if we ever had to get out of our second story (all of our bedrooms are on the second story)we could. It was only $27 on amazon.
- Smoke Decectors- Obviously duh, I won't lie I often set them off in the kitchen. So when I do this I use it as a teaching experience. When they go off I tell Leo about that is a smoke detector and what it means, then I ask him if he sees smoke and fire and we "run to our family meeting spot" more on that below.
2. Family Safety Plan-
- Family Meeting Spot- Now that Leo is old enough we have established a family meeting spot in case of a fire. Upstairs it is right outside the kids bedrooms and then downstairs it is the front door entryway mat. We "practice" with Leo what to do and we all (I even make Jay do this) run to the meeting spot. We talk about how then we would go outside and wait for the fire department.
- Sleep With Doors Closed- We went to the fire station a few times for pre-school and our big take away that we should all sleep with our doors closed. We also told Leo if he opened the door and saw fire right outside his door to stay in his room until we or a firefighter came and got him. Obviously as he gets older we can talk about the window in his room and how he could get out of that. But obviously we can't explain that to a 3 year old.
- Fire Book- We have a Pete the Cat Firefighter book that Leo loves to read. It is a way to talk about fire safety without scaring them. Find that book HERE! It doesn't teach fire safety at home but it is a good way to introduce them to firefighters.
3. Visit A Fire Station-
Hope you guys have a wonderful week. We are coming off a HORRIBLE week with Monroe. She was so sick, ended up in the ER, and has not been sleeping. Like up for hours in the middle of the night, up several times to eat, crying all day long... etc etc etc. I think she is finally feeling better although the nighttime wake ups aren't getting any better. So I am hoping and praying once she start feeling better she will go back to sleeping through the night.
Cheers,
Jess
- We have been able to do this a few times with our pre-school but what I love is that they will put their gear on and show the kids what they look like when all their gear and to not be scared. I won't lie it freaks Leo out but it then gives me an opportunity to teach him to not be scared and why they have to wear all of that gear.
- Remove all hand towels that hang on the oven, it is easy for little kids to pull the towel down and open the oven.
- If you have a fireplace teach them that it is hot and not to touch it.
- So after we were faced last year with the wildfire behind our house Jay and I discussed things that we wanted to go in our fireproof safe and then a quick list of things we would grab in a fire. I am mostly sentimental so in our fireproof safe we have our passports, birth certificates, but also a flash drive of our wedding photos and any other family photos we have had professionally taken and the kids baby books. I also started uploading all my photos onto amazon storage so in case of a fire I wouldn't lose my photos. So basically if we were in a fire we wouldn't feel the need to run in to save anything we could just make sure our family and pets were safe.
