I had been so pumped for Leo's Bug Birthday. I had literally been planning this birthday for months. As we watched the weather for the weekend of his birthday we saw a legit blizzard was coming 4-6 inches of snow and 30 mph winds. We decided to move the party to Sunday, still the weather didn't improve much, but we did have 7 little friends make it to celebrate with Leo. We had 17 kids that had RSVPed yes so needless to say ALOT of them were unable to attend. It is funny because my birthday is a week before and my Mom told me my 3rd birthday was also snowed out and only 1 friend was able to come to my party. I guess 3rd birthdays just don't go in our favor.
Since I put in a lot of work I figured I'd share the birthday as a blog post. I think the key in doing at home birthdays for young kids (in the winter) is to have a lot of different activities for them to do. Despite the low attendance we had a blast and the next day Leo's cousins were able to finally get out of their driveway and they came over and we did all the activities again. So basically we got to have 2 parties so I think it was worth it!

Invites
I found these cute little bug invites on etsy. I think she designed then for $8. I had them printed at walmart, it wasn't the best quality but they made me wait in line for like 15 minutes so they just gave me them for free. I sent out a few but I also texted some out. I think next year I'll just get some made and text them out because that was was so MUCH easier.
Decor
We hired Posh Party Bebes to do balloon arch and food table decor. Last year I spend money having cupcakes and a cake made but this year I decided to make my own cupcakes and allocate those funds on the decor since we do it in our garage. She did simply an amazing job!
CupCakes
I made "dirt and worms cupcakes" using a cookies and cream cupcake recipe with a chocolate buttercream. It was really so simple, what you can't see is there was a gummy worm in the back as well. This recipe was literally the easiest most yummy cupcake I've ever had. I ran out of butter cream so hence the small portion on this cupcake but I just found a chocolate buttercream recipe online. But if you want to make the best cupcakes try using this recipe HERE! It was so easy and yummy.
For other food we did little peanut butter and jelly cut out with bug cookie cutters then what pigs in a blanket. It is my signature birthday food and the kids and adults gobble it up.

Activities
Bug Sensory Pool
Last year for Leo's birthday we filled up 3 little pools with 300 lbs of dried corn. The kids loved it so this year we filled up a pool using beans. I got a ton of bugs off of amazon and dumped then in with some things the kids could dig with. This probably was the biggest hit of the party.
Play Dough Station
I made a bug play dough station. I got giant bugs off of amazon to make bug "fossils" I also had a little tray full of other play dough items. I made my own play dough using a recipe I found on pinterest, it was hot chocolate play dough so it smelled really good and I needed the dark color to look like mud or dirt.
Make Your Own Bug Station
Using egg cartons and some craft supplies there was a little make your own bug station. There was some older kids that were supposed to come to the party ages 5-8 so this was geared more towards them. But Leo and a few other of the older party guests still make their bugs.
I also printed out some bugs on colored paper and had a bunch of glitter and glue for the kids to design their own bugs.
Big thanks to Jay who literally puts up construction plastic over all the walls in our garage, sweeps and mops the floors, and then helps clean it all up! He said no more garage parties but I really love having them cause the kids can have fun and make a mess. They so often get yelled at for making a messes but once a year I say let them make a mess and what better place to make it than the garage. I have always had a dream of having a "food fight" party when the kids get older. I wonder what Jay is going to think when I propose that.
Cheers,
Jess
