A lot of you are probably hitting the gym these days working on those resolutions, I know my gym has been packed. For me getting a good workout is hard enough but I really have to make myself set aside time for stretching. A lot of people over look the importance of stretching, but it really is vital to prevent injury and general aches and pains. My husband can stretch for literally hours on end, I use to think he was crazy but after he pushed me to do it more often I started feeling a lot better physicaly. I now have made stretching a part of my regular routine and I have really started seeing the benefits.
If you have never checked out Toneitup.com you need to immediately. They have all types of workouts and a good variety of stretching routines. This is one my favorites that I usually do once or twice a week. On top of that I try to do hot yoga once a week, you really can’t beat a stretch like that! I also love Pilates and even just getting a general stretch while lounging at home always gets me felling good and loose.
In our living room we have this big basket of stretching equipment. We leave it here so when we are just relaxing watching TV we can easily get a good stretch in….may as well since we are just sitting there anyways.
These are some of the items we keep around and use regularly. None are really necessary to get a good stretch but they all are very helpful especially to roll out sore muscles. First is the foam roller, this is our one must have in our house. The hubs never leaves home without it, seriously he brings it on vacation with us! The medi is great to stretch out the calves. A stretch rope is nice to help stretch pretty much all the muscles in the body. The roller stick is ideal for getting deep in to sore muscles. It can hurt like a B$@*%, but totally worth the pain!
Here are some basic tips for stretching:
Hold each stretch for around 15 − 30 seconds
Use static stretching after your workout to help prevent soreness
Stretch sore muscles as well as the surrounding muscles before a workout
Stretch to improve posture (muscles shorten over time and can lead to poor posture)
Don’t hold your breath during a stretch
Happy stretching,
Ang
