I don't have much of a blogging process. But what I do have is a little notepad where I write down a ton of ideas of topics for possible blog post. I usually end up writing about 1/2 of them, but it is nice to have a constant list of things to chose from. This blog post been on my blog "list" for about 6 months and I am finally getting around to it. Last weekend we were out with friends talking about snacks our kids like to eat. People were really all over the map with what they feed their kids and were looking for new ideas. I thought I'd share with you a few of Leo's favorite snacks. Don't get me wrong he still gets fruit snacks, fish crackers, and apple sauce but I try and make a point to make sure his snacks have some protein and are fairly healthy. I have been feeding Leo these snacks since he was little so he never complains.
Our first go to snack is banana and peanut butter or almond butter. This kid LOVES them. He probably goes through 5 bananas a week. This is always the first option I offer him after he wakes up from nap. I want him to have a more filling snack to hold him over for dinner. I have found he prefers peanut butter over the almond butter but I still try and sneak the almond butter in every so often.
Our next snack is perfect for on the go, it is a homemade trail mix. I prefer to make our own as most trial mix you buy have almonds and other nuts that are a little too hard for little ones to eat. So I pack his full of cashews, pistachios, peanuts, raisins, and some little dark chocolate bites. He likes the chocolate and don't put too much in there. I figured it is a compromise to get him to eat this snack.
Yogurt drops are a great snack but are ones we eat at home at the table or outside. I am a "mean mom" and have never let Leo have popsicles. I just didn't want to deal with the mess not because I am crazy about the sugar. Instead since he was about 1 I started making him these frozen yogurt drops in greek yogurt. These tend to be more of a summer snack for us. When he was little I got regular blueberries but as he has gotten older I buy the jumbo blueberries. All you do is put some greek yogurt in a bowl, throw some berries in, toss them around then place them on parchment paper and in the freezer. They are ready to eat in an hour. I then will pop them off the parchment paper and put them in a airtight container in the freezer. This is our alternative to a popsicle, Leo even calls them ice cream. Little does he know......
A few of our other go to snacks you can buy at the store are the RX kids bars, I don't like the mess the chocolate makes so I get the apple ones. Leo also loves dried apples, raisins, and turkey jerky. When I am home I will often offer him yogurt, grapes, sliced cucumbers and bell peppers which he LOVES. This kid is a veggie and fruit guy.
I think that was in part to our garden last year. We grew a bunch of different veggies and he got to eat them off the vine and became obsessed especially with cherry tomatoes. So if your kids don't love their veggies as much maybe try a little garden this year. He loved checking it to see what has grown and doing the veggie haul everyday. And if you think a garden is a lot of work I'm here to tell you it actually isn't. It was my first year gardening and it was so simple. The hardest part was at the end of the season tearing everything out. We are making our garden even bigger this year to add in some new stuff. I'm so excited!!!
I hope this helps you mamas out there looking for healthy snacks. Don't you worry our pantry isn't all organic or all natural I just try and make an effort to keep things balanced. If he had a fruit snack earlier and ask for another snacks then his options are yogurt, banana and peanut butter, or trail mix. It's all about balance.
Cheers,
Jess
