So I technically know we aren't supposed to be traveling for Thanksgiving or Christmas, but I think if you decided to spend the holidays with your family or not that is a personal choice. We will be seeing my parents and in laws but not our large extended families. That is our comfort level and I understand it isn't for everyone.
With that being said some of you might be traveling so here are my travel items for kids.
We probably spent a good 100 hours in the car road tripping this year. Our longest being 20+ hours that we went from Scottsdale back home to Washington after covid hit. Now that I have put the hours in I figured I'd share all my secrets for entertaining kids in the car.

All you need is a cookie sheet or a high sided baking sheet. I prefer the ones with sides just because things stay on them easier. Each kid gets a little metal tray in the car then the magnets and the magnet men will stick to them. They can also use them for the squigz and the wikki sticks. Leo will set up big mazes for his dinosaurs to go through using these items.
For around town we also love the magnetic boards or activity folders. They fit so easily in the back pocket of your car. Same goes with the felt books or any felt items.
For long car rides I also love the sticker pads, the Melisa and Doug find and seek pads for Leo (4) are always a big hit. Both kids love the lacing activity shoe string that is also by Melissa and Doug.
Lastly the item that lives in my car no matter what is the little rainbow pin art toy. My kids fight over this so much that I had buy another one.

Don't get me wrong the kids will watch their tablets and play games, but when they great bored I always have extra things on hand. Plus if you follow me I always have a new activity box for their trips. I always switch up the theme for the trip. So they are usually asking for those the minute we get into the car instead of their tablets.
I also had to share this wonderful idea. My friend traveled with her kids and made this little wallet for her 14 month old. The baby loved taking the photos in and out of the wallet plus kids at this age love looking at photos. What a great idea and I had to share it.
But when they do watch their tablets their favorite shows are.
Leo (4.5)- Any Lego shows, Power Ranger Dinos, Wild Kratts, Bluey, Number Blocks, Story Bots, and anything about dinosaurs.
Monroe (2) - Frozen, Marsha and the Bear, Beauty and the Beast, Pink Fong, Mother Goose Club, and Simple Songs.
We have gotten pretty good with road trips in the car, we haven't flown since March but I am assuming you can use the same things minus the metal tray. The other tidbit I have is that eating in the car is a waste of a stop. When you stop to get fast food or whatever find a place where they can run. LET THEM RUN for 10-15 minutes while the driver eats. Then get back in the car and feed the kids. Feeding themselves will entertain them for awhile and no reason to use that time when stopped. When we stop anywhere we try and place chase and different little games (like can you find something green, run to that tree, frog hop to those flowers, you get the idea). Getting their energy out is key . But at any point in the road trip nothing is better than looking back and seeing this....

Happy road trips or where ever your trips take you this holiday season. Last pro tip a sucker can go a long way. We always have sucker on hand but try and save them for the last 30 mins of the trip when quite frankly everyone is over it!
Cheers.
